Oyster & Scales – Ocean City, MD

Sometimes you stumble into a place before the world knows it exists.

That’s exactly what happened to us at Oyster & Scales in Ocean City, Maryland — and honestly, this “accidental finding” feels a little like we found buried treasure.

We heard about it from folks we were telling how good the Spain Wine Bar is — they responded by telling us about a waterside spot with an open porch and a roofed deck that just beckoned to us.

Something about it had that pull. You know the feeling. The kind of place that looks like it was built for exactly the kind of afternoon you were hoping to have. We went in, and we’re so glad we did.

A Soft Opening — and a Lucky Find

What we didn’t know walking through the door was that we had arrived during what can only be called a soft opening. Owner Peter Elias was still fine-tuning things — honing in on the finer details before making any kind of official announcement to the public.

He wasn’t about rushing the experience.

Rather, he was all about perfecting it.

You could feel that in everything, from the way the staff moved to the care taken with every plate that came out of the kitchen. It was clear when we were there, Peter knows what he’s doing, and he wasn’t going to let the world in until it was right.

The People Behind the Place

Peter and his wife, Golie Miamee Elias, are the team behind Oysters & Scales, and together they also own Spain Wine Bar — so this is clearly a family with a passion for creating memorable dining experiences.

But Oysters & Scales has its own personality, its own spirit, and Golie has left her mark on it in a beautifully personal way. The artwork throughout the restaurant? That’s hers. Every piece of it.

Walking through the space feels like stepping into a gallery that also happens to serve exceptional food. It gives the whole place a warmth and soul that you just can’t manufacture — it has to come from somewhere real, and here it clearly comes from the heart.

We were fortunate enough to meet Peter and capture his vision.

The Food — Let’s Talk About the Food

Now, let’s talk about the food. Because the food is worth talking about.

Phenomenal. That’s the word. And anyone who knows us, knows that we don’t use it lightly. Expecially when it comes to food.

The seafood was the kind of fresh that reminds you why you make the trip to the coast in the first place. Fresh is the key word here.

Every bite felt intentional — composed, flavorful, and executed with a confidence that told us the kitchen isn’t guessing. They know exactly what they’re doing.

We left satisfied in that deep, contented way that only truly great food can produce. Not simply because we were full, but because the food was phenomenal.

The Deck, the Docks, and the View

The setting, though — that’s its own character in the story. The open porch and roofed deck give you the best of both worlds: the open air, the breeze off the water, and just enough shelter so that the sun or a passing cloud doesn’t dictate your afternoon. It’s the kind of seating you want to linger in.

And linger we did.

From our spot on that deck, we had a straight-on view of the docks. As the afternoon rolled toward evening, boats began coming in — one after another, the day’s work wrapping up, lines being tied off, engines going quiet. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching that rhythm, the working waterfront doing its thing right in front of you while you sit with a drink and something extraordinary on your plate.

The Moment We Won’t Forget

But here’s the moment that really got us — the one that cemented this visit into memory. A duck appeared near one of the pilings below. We watched, half-distracted, as it circled slowly. Then — down it went, plunging beneath the surface with purpose. A beat. Two beats. And up it came, a crab clenched in its bill. (see it happen here)

Just like that.

Nature doing its thing, completely unbothered by the restaurant above, the boats nearby, or the two of us watching with our jaws slightly open. We laughed. It was perfect. The kind of unscripted moment that no restaurant can plan for, but somehow Oysters & Scales provided the exact stage for it to happen.

Go. Before Everyone Else Does.

That’s the thing about this place — it layers. The food, the art, the owners’ story, the water view, the working boats, and yes, even the duck with its crab. It all adds up to something that feels genuinely special.

We have no doubt that since Peter made the call and opened the doors officially, Oysters & Scales will make itself one of those Ocean City spots that earns a fierce and loyal following. It already deserves it.

Do yourself a favor — go find it. Get there before everyone else does.
