Kush-Wynwood – Miami, Florida

The whole reason we initially went to Kush-Wynwood was for their Key Lime pie. Our daughter mentioned that this was one of two places in Miami known for their Key Lime Pie. Dianne loves Key Lime pie. We found out when we got there, that’s not at all what Kush is known for. What a pleasant surprise to find the restaurant has a great atmosphere, wonderful servers, craft beer, and well prepared exotic foods.

All because of Key Lime pie.

The restaurant

The outside is warehouse-esque. It fits right in to the surrounding industrial setting. Being close to Wynwood Walls, it’s not surprising that it has some graffiti as well. The place doesn’t look big when you first approach it from the street.

We quickly saw that they have a fair amount of seating and plenty of room to stand. Outdoors they have 34 table seats in addition to some stand up seating. They also have a waiting room area that opens at 2pm.  This allows around another 30 people to drink and snack while waiting.

There’s also some instructional chastising for those who are inclined to litter the environment.

Indoors there are 30 restaurant seats and 11 bar seats. The inside is clean, good colors, and nouveau industrial chic (we might have just made up the term – nouveau industrial chic). It looks really nice and creates a very nice dining atmosphere. It helps that it is set up such that it’s not particularly crowded.

If they sit you at a table larger than your party? They let you know up front their seating is European style. In other words, they will more than likely sit another party that you don’t know at your table with you. We had the good fortune of sitting down with another couple initially. They were replaced by some guys from Ireland. Great conversations were had with both!

Craft Beer?

This was totally unexpected. As part of their draft menu, Kush features a wide variety of craft beer. However, they even have their very own Kaptain Kush which is brewed exclusively for Kush by Tripping Animals Brewing Co. If you go to Tripping Animals outlet, it is still Kaptain Kush. It met all expectations.

The Food

With our mind on the “end game” (Key Lime pie), we knew we should order lunch first.

One of the first things Gary saw was the Alligator Bites on the menu. Anything that intriguing is begging for him to order it. The alligator bites came with 3 sauces – creamy garlic, spicy mayo and Old Bay (in this case more seasoning than sauce). You’re probably thinking, isn’t Old Bay is a Chesapeake Bay phenomenon? Apparently it’s fame has made its way all the way to Miami!

Being close to the Caribbean, there’s nothing like a good conch salad. This course came with two spices – spicy Kush and Sriracha.

We also ordered the Guacamole. It also came with the spicy Kush sauce.

Because our server Marilin recommended the Johnny Utah and Frita burgers, we decided we had to get one of each. They came out branded with the Kush label and were every bit as good as they looked.

The Key Lime Pie

Now that you’ve read this far you’re thinking, “But how was the Key Lime pie?”. It was definitely worth ordering, but we won’t stop there. Both of us agreed that this Key Lime pie had the best crust of any Key Lime pie we’ve ever tasted. And we’ve tasted more than our fair share. The Key Lime whipped cream added a lot to the flavor.

It was so good that we ordered some to go. It came with extra crust crumbles for the topping and Key Lime whipped cream.

Kush – Wynwood not only lived up to their reputation with the Key Lime Pie, but the rest of their food was just as good. This experience is one we recommend!
