As we Journey Moore Often on the bike trails we get to explore many of the local gems and sites. In our recent June journey we headed to lower Delaware. We had 2 trails that we wanted to explore by riding our bikes. The first (and close by) was the Lewes Georgetown Bicycle Trail, which will be covered in another article. The 2nd was venturing our way to Slaughter Beach from a local favorite B&B – Iona Stables and Inn.
We chose Iona Stables for this venture because of its perfect location to the Georgetown to Lewes Bike trail, and to Slaughter beach. And don’t get me started on Iona’s awesome breakfasts, amazing hosts and beautiful location.
The Ride
So Gary and I decided to head our way to Slaughter beach in the morning, turning left out of Iona’s half mile driveway. We knew that the distance was going to be a lot shorter than some of the other biking adventures that we had been on. We, also, knew that this was not an actual bike path and that we would have to be on the road for most of the time. Despite not personally being a huge fan of riding on the road, I liked the bike route, because I knew this particular travel would not have a large volume of vehicle travel. It didn’t hurt to have bike lanes for part of the trip.
The first leg of the trip was mostly a country road, which I don’t believe we passed any cars on. There’s the Cedar Creek Farmhouse that offers some local history.
I would say that we were on this for about a mile or so before we hit the larger road, Slaughter Beach Road. This is the road that pretty much takes you to the Beach. The road itself is nice ride and does have the bike paved path I mentioned earlier for most of it.
The view on this part of the bike ride is quiet (serene) and scenic. As we got closer to the beach we could see the Prime Hook State Wildlife Management area on our right. And, of course being in the country, there are several farms on both sides of the road.
The Beach
As we came to a T in the road, we made a left turn on to Bay Avenue then a quick right where the firehouse is.
They provide parking there and have a very nice pavilion up on the beach, including bathrooms! The pavilion is open to events, or just to sit and watch the water in the shade. This was approximately 4 miles from the Inn.
We didn’t linger long. However, it would have been a perfect opportunity to just sit on the beach and enjoy the view. While we were there we did not see any people on the beach.
Practical Stuff
The journey back and forth was in total an 8 mile trip. And the road is relatively flat. This was a perfect short ride that allowed us to see a local gem that is not overly visited by tourist.
By the time we got back to Iona we had a hearty appetite and were ready to enjoy the amazing breakfast that was waiting for us to enjoy.
