The Whip Tavern – BYOB

The Whip Tavern is in an out-of-the-way location and sits by itself in the country slightly west of Unionville, PA, but has a Coatesville address.

The setting is both beautiful and quiet.

Sometimes you even encounter goats crossing the road and have to wait.

Stepping into the restaurant/pub is like walking into a 17th century pub in Wales, and we’ve seen a few. Local newspapers often write up The Whip Tavern with plenty of good things to say.

The inside can sometimes get wonderfully ruckus, especially when the World Cup is playing. Don’t be surprised if you see entire local rugby teams show up just after their match, and it’s not unusual to see opposing teams downing a pint together. We’ve talked to a number of folks who like to enjoy the “after game” there.

Please note that they DON’T TAKE RESERVATIONS, but not to worry, there’s a large waiting area before the bar where you can order a drink and relax.

We recently got there at 4:30pm, and by the time we left, the restaurant was getting pretty full.

On some days the wait can be a tad long, but it’s definitely worth it! Plus, the waiting area has enough room and seating for about 20 people with an overized coffee table to use.

If the wait is on the longer side (it can get to be 2 hours when they’re really busy), you can order and eat there. A couple of times, we’ve even eaten our entire dinner in the waiting area. It was a blast talking to people as they were waiting to be called for their table. Sometimes people eat there when there’s still plenty of room in the dining area.

The Whip menu mostly reflects the history of the location having Welsh Rarebit and Beef on Weck as well as some American fare. The food is always good, no matter what you order. Once we even had ox tail!

The Whip is a BYOB (like Twelves Grill and Sovana Bistro), so don’t forget to bring wine with you if that’s what you’re looking forward to drinking during the meal. They do have beer and cider on tap along with a long list of bottle beer and cider, so no need to worry there.

They have an outside patio for the summer which alleviates the waiting time during the warmer weather.

If you’re at one of the tables near the wall, you can even see the stream that’s right on the other side.

The bathrooms are decorated with 17th century reproduction wallpaper.

The first time one uses the sink, it can be confusing. With  the help of the sign it becomes a little clearer with regard to how everything works. It’s actually a pretty cool device and we haven’t seen anything like it before.
